The Best Ways to Practice Listening to English

One of the most important parts of learning a language is being able to understand people when they speak. Listening comprehension is crucial in many situations, especially when having a conversation with others.

It can be hard to practice listening when we study a foreign language! With the traditional method, we generally memorize a lot of vocabulary and do exercises in grammar books. So how can we practice listening?

Podcasts

A wonderful series of audios done by the BBC called “6-minute English” gives us an excellent opportunity to listen to English. Each episode talks about a particular topic, something simple enough to discuss for six minutes.

There are plenty of other English-learning podcasts on streaming platforms that allow us to listen to a lot of English. It’s a simple, portable way to practice!
 

Conversation

A great way to practice listening is when another person is talking to us. Of course it is best to do this with native speakers. Listening to their accent and pronunciation gives us invaluable experience.

With social media and programs like Skype and Zoom, it is easier than ever to connect with people and practice speaking and listening to English.

Viajar

Traveling to an English-speaking country is obviously another great way to practice listening to English. Whether is be London or Dublin, in the street or in a bar, you are surrounded by native speakers conversing with each other. Your listening comprehension will improve naturally, and in a fun environment!

Direct method approach

With a direct method, you are not only speaking but also listening to English constantly during the lesson. The question-answer format of the lesson is the perfect way to practice as much as possible
