Learning anything when you are an adult can be a difficult task. We are often set in our ways and find it hard to accept new ideas and ways of thinking. This is very true with languages. Learning to understand a different grammar structure from your native language can take quite a bit of getting used to.

How do I get started

Getting started is pretty easy. Making the decision and then calling a school or a teacher and signing up for lessons is step one. Step two is following through and Starting with the very basics is the best way. Some easy verbs and common nouns along with a few common adjectives and you are on your way to a few basic sentences by the end of the first few lessons. By the end of your first few weeks, you should be able to answer basic questions from the teacher.

What if the younger students are better than me?

Never compare yourself to other people, especially as an older person comparing yourself to a younger person. We all learn at different rates and young people tend to take in information quite quickly, whereas an older person might take a few more times to finally understand. Just remember, it’s not a race.

Always compare yourself today to yourself yesterday. Are you better now than you were then? If the answer is “yes”, then you are doing well.

Choosing the right school for you

It is essential that you choose the school that suits your needs. There are many different styles of schools with many different teaching methods out there and lots of levels of experience of their teachers. Some schools may have inexperienced teachers with a bad method and some may have very experienced teachers with a great method or a mixture of both.
