Why is it so hard for me to learn English while my friends find it really easy? This is a question we often ask ourselves, and it’s easy to compare ourselves to others, even when we know we shouldn’t.
Today we are going to analyze some reasons as to why this may happen.

There are different reasons why you may find learning English so difficult;

  • The environmental setting: by environmental setting we mean the amount of exposure you have to the second language. For example, if you already speak a ‘romance language’ (a latin based language) then it will be easier for you to learn a language with similar origins because of the similarities they may share between vocabulary and grammatical structures.
  •

  • Trouble with listening: if you are a person who listens to song lyrics and has the ability to memorize them, congratulations, this means you can comprehend audios in an agile and receptive way.
  •

  • Starting to learn later in life: while we know it’s never too late to learn, the earlier you start, the better. It is a lot easier for you brain to comprehend and learn new structures and create connections while it is still developing.
  •

  • Inability to adapt: if you are able to grasp different concepts and adapt to new structures easily you will be able to view grammar in a more abstract way, which will make learning languages like English a lot easier. This ability will help to stop your native language from acting as a kind of barrier between you and the new language.
  •

  • No socialization between you and those of other languages: by interacting with people from other countries and cultures, who speak different languages than yourself, you can grow accustomed to hearing and learning the different sounds. By pursuing ‘international relationships’ your exposure to these new languages increases and your motivation to learn grows.
